A selection of facts about our peculiar peepers
Here at Direct Sight HQ we pride ourselves on being eye geeks. There’s not much we don’t know about them, and if we were a contestant on Mastermind they would definitely be our specialist subject.
The design of each part of the eye is so detailed and intricate that we are overwhelmingly lucky to have the gift of sight, and with that in mind we thought we’d show off a selection of our favourite peculiar facts.
1. The structure of our eyes is so dazzlingly remarkable that they took around 550 million years to develop to where they are today. The first eyes were simply patches able to detect light from dark, and some animals such as snails haven’t really evolved since then!
2. 550 million years might sound like a long time, but it was spent knitting together the 2 million individual working parts that provide us with vision today – we’d say it was worth the wait!
3. Blinking helps to lubricate the eyes and wash away any dirt and dust that’s trapped in them. On average, we do it 10,000 times a day totalling a solid 30 minutes spent with our eyes shut!
4. What we see when looking into people’s eyes is only the tip of the iceberg; the visible portion only accounts for 1/6 of the total eye mass, which has a width of just over one inch.
5. The human body produces less tears as it gets older, and aging oil glands produce less lubricating oils – make sure to take extra special care of dry eyes as you grow!
6. If we were to save all the eyelashes we shed in a lifetime and stick them end-to-end we’d have an eyelash tower just under 100 feet tall – lucky they drop off!
There are thousands upon thousands of amazing eye facts, and this is just the tiniest of selections. Remember to always look after your eyes with a good pair of glasses or sunglasses, and next time you look in the mirror take a second to marvel at your perplexingly perfect peepers.
