Plastic, metal, titanium: what's the difference?
When choosing a pair of glasses, you may find yourself faced with a vast array of shapes, sizes, colours, brands and even materials. This simple advice breaks down the three material options we offer here at Direct Sight, to help make your online shopping experience easier.
Plastic
Benefits
- Plastic frames are available in a wide range of colours, patterns and designs, including the popular wayfarer shape. With these options, it’s easy to make a bold statement using colour with a wide frame.
- They offer durability and impact-resistant strength, meaning they are ideal for sports.
- Plastic is lightweight and unobtrusive, meaning you can carry out your daily activities without difficulty.
- Due to the nature of plastic, these frames are often cheaper than more expensive metal alternatives.
Drawbacks
- Over time, plastic frames can become discoloured, particularly if you choose a light colour. The best way to prevent this is to take the best care of your glasses with regular cleaning and maintenance.

Metal
Benefits
- As the material of choice for most tools, metal is naturally strong and durable. The metals used to make glasses are also malleable, meaning they can be designed for a comfortable fit.
- Ideal for subtlety if you want your glasses barely noticeable, as the frames can be made extraordinarily thin with narrow arms.
Drawbacks
- Metal normally offers more limited colour options than plastic frames and there are fewer frame styles available. Whilst the popular aviator Ray Bans are made of metal, wayfarers and most retro styles are reserved for the plastic frames.
- They are also slightly heavier than plastic frames.
- Some people are allergic to metal frames. Find out which metals you may be sensitive to before you buy, and we can offer a range of hypoallergenic frames to suit your needs.

Titanium
Benefits
- Titanium is very lightweight, durable and corrosion-resistant, meaning these glasses will provide lasting comfort and protection.
- Titanium is also hypoallergenic; meaning customers who are sensitive to certain metals can experience the comfort of titanium.
- Due to its malleable quality, titanium can bend and returns to its original shape, making it ideal for active lifestyles and cost-effective because they require minimum maintenance.
Drawbacks
- Titanium frames tend to be more expensive than plastic frames.
